Massachusetts Institute of
Technology - one of the most prestigious technical universities in the world
and a leader of numerous ratings. The mission of MIT is considered to be the
training of specialists in the field of natural sciences and engineering that
will advance the progress and shape the face of the XXI century.
Story:
The university was founded in
1861 in response to the needs of a changing society. The founder of the MIT,
geologist and physicist William Burton Rogers was convinced that a classical
education in the new conditions was unable to prepare the necessary
specialists. MIT was supposed to be a new type of higher education institution,
based on the principle of useful knowledge, the necessity of learning through
action and unification of Applied Sciences and Arts. MIT philosophy is
reflected in its motto "Mens et Manus" ("Head and hands").
During World War II, he worked
at MIT scientists and researchers who actively helped the military and
contributed greatly to the development of science. The academic reputation of
the University has strengthened, and in the postwar years, the university began
to receive serious public support, including financial. Laboratory received the
best equipment, the number of employees grew, and the focus shifted to the
students on graduate students. From educational institutions MIT has become a
major research center and since then holds the position as one of the best
technical universities in the world.
Programs:
Although the hallmark of the
University are the natural sciences and technical specialties, a
multi-university where you can study as architecture, humanities and social
sciences, arts and management. At the same time the most popular, of course,
enjoy a program of applied sciences, especially among undergraduate and
graduate students. Program management are very popular among those who are
planning to get a master's degree. Business education offers the prestigious
School of Management Sloan the MIT.
Number of students: About 11
thousand. This four and a half thousand students are enrolled in a bachelor
degree. Foreign students most in graduate and postgraduate - nearly three
thousand, but in the bachelor dominated by the Americans: the proportion of
foreigners is only 10%. Interestingly, nearly half of all foreign students in
the MIT - is Asians, which is not surprising: in Asia very seriously and are
actively interested in the formation of the new technologies, so Asian students
(and often among the best) in the most prestigious American universities are
not uncommon. In business school MIT Sloan about 40% of the students are
foreigners.
Famous alumni: the pilot, the
first one day cross the territory of the United States, James Doolittle,
astronauts Edwin Aldrin and David Scott, an economist and president of the US
Federal Reserve, Ben Bernanke, the Prime Ministers Benjamin Netanyahu,
co-founder of Hewlett-Packard's William Hewlett, Secretary General Kofi Annan,
the engineer and writer, an expert on missiles Steve Altes, onsnovatel iRobot's

creator of the Ethernet Robert Metcalfe, the linguist Noam Chomsky, CIA
Director John Deutch, as well as a huge number of inventors, government figures
and world-renowned scientists, including many Nobel laureates in physics,
chemistry and economics. MIT does not award diplomas as an honorary degree, as
do many other universities. An exception is made in rare cases, for example, had a degree of Winston
Churchill, even though Britain's Prime Minister has received no education at
MIT, and on the other side of the Atlantic at the Royal Military College at
Sandhurst.
