The largest US public
educational and research university under a single administration. The total
number of students is more than 72000. Buildings of the University spread over
4 campuses, located in the Greater Phoenix.
The university was founded in
1885 under the name of Tempe Normal School (the name similar to the
French. ÉcoleNormale) in Tempe, State of
Arizona. In 1945, the school came under the control of the Board of Governors
of Arizona and was renamed the College of Arizona. In 1958, as a result of the
voting held at the state, the school was renamed the University of Arizona;
Thus, it is the only US institution of higher education, has achieved
university status by the popular vote. In 1984 there was an extension of the
university; in addition to the campus in Tempe, West Campus appeared in the
state capital of Phoenix, and then in 1996 added the Polytechnic campus in the
eastern city of Mesa, and in 2006 appeared the campus on the outskirts of
Phoenix. All four campuses are part of the university.
In the 2007-2008 academic year,
the University has 14,535 students. In 2008 entrants University began 168
schoolchildren with national honors (en: National Merit Scholar), many of whom
were college graduates Barrett (en: Barrett, The Honors College), graduates of
which, since its founding in 1988, not once conquered various grants and
honorary scholarships. According to the Carnegie classification of higher
education Institutions University of Arizona belongs to a
class of VH (Research University with very high research activity).
